Gaining Healthy Weight During Pregnancy

Many women do not mind getting pregnant, what they do mind is the weight they have gained experience within 9 months and two months after pregnancy. Weight gain during pregnancy is a must, it helps to give the embryo its vitamins and minerals to ensure healthy growth.

If you do not gain enough weight during pregnancy, there May be fetal malformations. If your body does not get enough nutrients, your baby will be hard enough to find good, healthy growth. This leads to a dependence on reserves that could lead to deficiencies.

On the other hand, if too much gain, you can increase the risk of diabetes or problems with labor. Several studies have revealed that more than average weight gain during pregnancy, paves the way to obesity in women after childbirth. So, look at the books from sticking to your body!

Dealing with Stretch Marks

Something I know I was really worried about during my pregnancy was getting stretch marks.  I was in my mid 20’s and worked really hard to keep a decent “bikini body” so I wasn’t crazy about the idea of getting stretch marks that would leave it permanently scarred.  Let me back up and give you the full overview on what I am talking about.

Our skin is pretty stretchy.  It can take quite a bit and responds very well when our bodies change and grow.  Unless that growth is very quick.  Any time there is a period of rapid weight gain or loss or skin is in jeopardy of getting stretch marks.  The commonly afflicted include body builders, teenagers and of course pregnant women.

When our bodies grow too fast and our skin can’t keep up, the dermis will actually tear.  This leaves purplish grooves that are medically called striae.  They can be a little itchy, but they are perfectly harmless.  Except if you are like me you thing they look horrible and want to avoid getting them at all costs.

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and that definitely applies when dealing with stretch marks.  That is absolutely true when dealing with stretch marks.  As they are actually scars they are next to impossible to get rid of once you get them so it is far better to not get them to begin with.

Your best shot at preventing stretch marks lies in a combination of gaining weight as slowly as possible and keep your skin ultra moisturized.

You only have so much control over the rate at which you gain weight when you are pregnant.  Your baby is going to grow how it is going to grow.  But there is a lot you can do to manage the additional weight you gain beyond that.  For example give plenty of attention to your diet and be sure that you are eating healthy and minimizing any junk.  Also, be sure to keep up with your exercise program.

The other trick is to keep your skin as moisturized as possible so that it can endure the tremendous strain that the new growth is going to be placing on it.

If you do get stretch marks, and it is entirely possible that you still will get some.  Your best bet is to consider one of the popular stretch mark creams like Trilastin.  This particular product as received plenty of positive reviews and was even featured on the Tyra Banks Show.

Beyond those tips there is really nothing else you can do.  Stretch marks are a part of pregnancy and a part of life.  They are a souvenir of the time you spent carrying your wonderful new baby in your belly and you should embrace them as such.  They are not they end of the world and after you have taken the steps that are within your control, you’ll will just have to let go and let nature take its course.

What About Exercising While Pregnant?

Maintaining your overall health is very important, especially during pregnancy. Exercise can help give you energy, construction of bones and muscles and keep you healthy. Prenatal exercise will help you look and feel better, reduce constipation, leg cramps, bloating and swelling, lift your spirits, help you relax, improve your posture, to promote and help endurance, help you sleep better, you better prepare for the hard work of labor, and give you a good start in fitness after the baby is born.

Swimming, walking, yoga and two very popular exercise activities suitable for pregnant women. There are other forms of exercise such as weight lifting that are acceptable as long as it is not too painful. Most specialists recommend exercise during pregnancy to 3 – 4 times a week unless you have a medical condition that prevents it. If you are in doubt you should consult a doctor first.

The Benefits of Pregnancy Pillows

Many women are kept up at night by back pain or back ache while they are pregnant. If this is the case for you then you might be more comfortable if you try sleeping on your side with a pregnancy pillow propped up between your legs.

Pregnancy pillows are ideal for any woman that suffers from sleep problems during pregnancy due to leg cramps, back pain or other related conditions.

So what exactly is a pregnancy pillow? It is a long, curved pillow, that gives support to your back and your neck while letting you curl up in a semi fetal position. This is the most comfortable position for most pregnant women. A pregnancy pillow will support your growing belly and your lower back, as well, letting you sleep in comfort, and stay asleep

It is recommended that pregnant women should try and sleep on their left side, as this allows increased blood flow to the baby. Many women have fount that using an extra pillow or two can help make this easier and provide you with better support. In response a whole industry has sprung up manufacturing pregnancy pillow specifically designed for this purpose. There are various kinds of available including longer ones that you can wrap your legs around, some that also provide back support. Others are wedge-shaped and can be used between the legs or under the belly.

When choosing a pregnancy pillow for you, choose the best pregnancy pillow that you feel would make you as comfortable as possible, yet still within your budget. It is encouraged to buy one with a removable and washable cover. Remember when it comes to price that this is an investment in a healthier and more comfortable sleep during and after pregnancy.

Pregnancy Clothes

It is commonly said that women look their most beautiful when pregnant.  There is something inherently endearing captured in that radiant glow.  So being pregnant doesn’t mean that you have to look frumpy by dressing in oversized sweats or other fashionably dreadful concoctions.  This is a time when you can shop for trendy, cute and hip maternity clothes to compliment your natural beauty.  In fact, the Edinburgh Evening News has a fun article on this topic citing recent celebrity pregnancy fashion as an example.

This can be therapeutic as well.  Dressing to look your best can make you feel great about your self and improve your self esteem.  As we can sometimes feel down about ourselves and our appearance too when we are pregnant, going out to buy designer clothes as a maternity outfit can do a great deal to make us feel better.

And let’s not forget shopping for pregnancy clothes as a satisfying uplifting experience itself.  Both online and traditional bricks and mortar stores are chock filled with everything from plus size maternity clothes to petite maternity clothes.  Regardless if you are looking for trendy designer brands or cheap discount clothes, it is all just a click or taxi drive away.

As exciting as it can be, try not to rush out and buy your pregnancy clothes too soon.  Your belly usually starts to expand during the second trimester, but it can pop out quickly and significantly or almost not at all until further along.  Hold off a bit on shopping for maternity wear until you have a good idea of how your body is changing.  I am not trying to put a damper on your fun, I just want you to avoid buying something you love, only to find that you never get a chance to wear it.

During pregnancy your uterus grows in size as your baby does, so you will feel your clothes tighten around the waist first.  Also your breast size with increase with the additional fluids and you will find your shirts fitting tighter as well.  All in all you will feel the same size because your height etc doesn’t change, but puffed out.

There is no mistaking that our society places an unhealthy emphasis on body image and weight in particular so as you feel yourself no longer fitting into your clothes, but not really "looking pregnant" yet, you may naturally feel depressed, awkward or less confident.  Properly fitting pregnancy clothes can help you overcome this and feel as great as you look.

Don’t buy more than two maternity bras at a time for the same reasons I outlined above.  Your cup sizes are growing continuously and they may need replacing often.

With summer upon us, maternity bathing suits are important.  Pregnancy swimwear is available in all sizes and fashions as well.  Don’t pass these up, because doctors agree that swimming is good exercise for pregnant mothers.

Buying (and wearing!) maternity lingerie is another way to feel sexy and beautiful.  Intimate pregnancy apparel is available in tasteful designs, but when your significant other gets a glimpse, you will realize how desirable you still are.

I have been talking quite a bit about staying fashionable and trendy while pregnant, but this does not mean you have to adopt a style that you are not comfortable with.  If you prefer to wear jeans then by all means continue to do so.  There are many styles and brands of pregnancy jeans available.  The bottom line is that you changing body shape should not dictate what type of clothes you wear, especially if wearing clothes you like makes you feel good.

Discount stores, garage sales, eBay and thrift shops can be a great source of finding pregnancy clothes that are in great shape and for a great price.  Remember these garments have probably not been worn too much and this can be a great way to beef up your maternity wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Lastly don’t ignore your feet when you are shopping for pregnancy clothes.  While there may not be maternity shoes specifically, wearing the proper footwear while pregnant is extremely important.  Don’t suffer in your old shoes, but instead look for something that is designed to better manage your new weight and are easy to take on and off.

Pregnancy Tests

Pregnancy tests work by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) which is a hormone released just after the embryo attaches to the uterine wall.  The levels of hCG increase rapidly over the following days.  The pregnancy tests that you take at home measure the hCG in the urine while a doctor can also perform a blood test.  The most sensitive urine tests can detect a pregnancy one day after a missed period.  It is recommended however to wait 5-10 days after your period is due to maximize the opportunity for the pregnancy test to detect the hormone.  Blood tests are far more sensitive than urine tests, but generally not necessary unless there is cause for concern.

False results can happen with home pregnancy tests.  If the test is designed to detect a level of hCG that is too high it can yield a false negative.  False positives can result from certain medications which contain the pregnancy hormone like Pregnyl, Profasi, Pergonal, and Humegon.  Negative tests can also occur due to human error so read and follow the instructions carefully.

The major difference between one pregnancy test and another is their sensitivity and how low the measurable levels of hCG may be.  The technology behind home pregnancy tests and improved dramatically over the years and there is less opportunity for human error.

Home pregnancy test kits are sufficient to diagnose a pregnancy; the key is to wait as long as possible so that your body has a chance to produce a sufficient amount of the hCG hormone so that the test is able to detect its presence.

Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is very common and a natural part of begin pregnant. The degree of morning sickness will vary from woman to woman with most experiencing some nausea and about thirty percent actually throwing up. It often comes on right at the beginning of the pregnancy and then subsides around the fifteenth week, but some expectant mothers are afflicted their entire pregnancy. Additionally while it is called “morning” sickness it can hit you any time.

Recent studies have shown that women who experience some degree of morning sickness are less likely to miscarry than those who don’t. One such study was printed in The International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. There is a debate about whether or not estrogen levels have anything to do with the severity of morning sickness.

Hyperemsis gravidarum is the name given to morning sickness so extreme that you may need go to the hospital. Fortunately this condition only occurs in 0.5% of the population of pregnant women

One explanation for morning sickness is that your digestive system slows down so food stays in your stomach longer, causing heartburn and nausea. With the multitude of changes your body is going through this certainly isn’t surprising.

There is no cure for morning sickness and the usual medicines you would take for motion sickness or nausea (like Dramamine) shouldn’t be taken while pregnant. You can try non medicinal treatments like Sea Band bracelets. These are specially designed wrist bands that work by applying pressure to a pressure point in your wrist.

Eating or snacking throughout the day can also be helpful. Try sipping on soft drinks that are not overly carbonated like Ginger Ale or even give soft drinks that have gone flat a try.

Overall though you will just have to ride it out, and try to take comfort that it is a small sacrifice to pay for the wonderful bundle of joy you are carrying.
